Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is a form of manual therapy that uses specialized tools to apply controlled pressure and friction to your muscles, skin, and connective tissue.
What is IASTM?
IASTM uses stainless steel tools, which are contoured to glide smoothly over different body structures. In doing so, the chiropractor can effectively feel areas of scar tissue and fascial restrictions. By rubbing the tool over the injured area, it creates local inflammation that brings new blood to the area, helping the tissue to heal. It is extremely useful on areas of chronic inflammation and tendonitis. Often times, it is performed while you are actively performing a movement. This specific kind of treatment is known as FAKTR, Functional and Kinetic Treatment with Rehab.
How does it work?
The application of the specialized tools helps stimulate blood flow to the area being treated, which promotes tissue healing and regeneration. It also helps disrupt scar tissue formation while encouraging healthy collagen production. Additionally, IASTM can help improve neuromuscular control and muscle activation patterns.
What are the benefits?
- Decreases overall time of treatment
- Enables faster rehabilitation/recovery
- Reduces need for anti-inflammatory medication
- Resolves chronic conditions thought to be permanent
- Continue to remain active
Does it hurt?
An injured tissue is usually hypersensitive so it can be a little uncomfortable to touch. During a treatment, you may experience some mild discomfort or sensation as the therapist works on specific areas. However, it is generally well-tolerated and should not cause excessive pain. Patients often report that it’s a “hurts so good” kind of feeling and a sense of relief and relaxation after treatment.
It is common to experience muscle soreness and possibly bruising for up to 48 hours.
Your visit
At the first visit, you will receive a comprehensive consultation and examination. The treatment involves a combination of spinal and extremity chiropractic adjustments, manual therapy, and prescribed exercises. The IASTM is used as a specific form of manual therapy that is incorporated along with other appropriate interventions for optimal results. This combination provides long lasting results to heal your pain at the source. You will always receive personalized attention and quality care to help you reach your goals.
