How Everyday Toxins Are Harming Your Body and What You Can Do

toxins in your home

Modern life brings convenience and comfort, but it also exposes us to a constant stream of chemicals that our bodies were never designed to handle. These toxins quietly build up over time and can burden your liver, disrupt hormones, inflame tissues, and interfere with how well your body and nervous system function.

As chiropractors, we often see that people cannot fully heal or respond to care until the chemical stress in their system is reduced. When inflammation is high and the liver or gut are overwhelmed, the nervous system stays stuck in stress mode. This can limit recovery, create muscle tension, and contribute to recurring spinal pain or stiffness.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the average person now carries more than 200 synthetic chemicals in their bloodstream.  Women apply an average of 168 chemicals per day through skincare and cosmetic products (Environmental Working Group). More than 80,000 synthetic chemicals are currently registered for use in the United States, yet fewer than ten percent have been tested for long-term safety in humans (NIH).

Your body is incredibly resilient, but when the toxic burden becomes greater than what your body can clear, dysfunction begins.

How Toxins Affect the Body

When toxins build up faster than your body can eliminate them, they begin to interfere with key systems and processes.

• Hormones: Chemicals like BPA and phthalates can mimic or block hormones, disrupting fertility, thyroid function, and metabolism.
• Inflammation and pain: Many toxins create oxidative stress, which increases inflammation and pain sensitivity.
• Detox pathways: The liver, kidneys, gut, lungs, and skin constantly remove waste. When overloaded, toxins can recirculate and increase fatigue, headaches, or brain fog.
• Nervous system function: Heavy metals and pesticides can interfere with the way nerves communicate between the brain, spine, and body.

Research shows that higher exposure to environmental toxins is linked to chronic pain, fatigue, and reduced energy (NIH). These effects are not only chemical but also neurological.

The Link Between Toxins and Spinal Dysfunction

In chiropractic, we recognize three major forms of stress that affect the body: physical, emotional, and chemical. Toxins fall into the chemical category. This type of stress can disrupt communication between the brain and body, leading to spinal tension, altered posture, and muscle imbalance.

When the nervous system is overloaded by toxins, it often shows up as stiffness, joint restriction, or slower recovery after injury. Toxins increase inflammation, which can make tissues more sensitive and cause recurring pain patterns. Patients with a high toxic load may also find that they need more frequent adjustments before lasting results appear.

Chiropractic adjustments restore normal motion, reduce nervous system interference, and improve blood and lymph flow. When adjustments are paired with simple daily habits that reduce exposure to toxins, the body can heal and adapt more efficiently.

Five Natural Ways to Reduce Your Toxic Load

1. Support Your Body’s Detox Systems

Your body is already designed to detoxify itself. You can support it by focusing on the basics:

• Drink clean, filtered water throughout the day
• Eat cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, kale, and cauliflower to support the liver
• Move your body daily to improve lymphatic flow
• Get seven to nine hours of quality sleep so your body can repair and eliminate waste

Movement improves lymphatic circulation up to ten times compared to rest, which helps your body clear toxins more efficiently.

2. Choose Cleaner Products

You do not need to replace everything at once. Start with what you use every day.

• Choose EWG verified skincare and cleaning products
• Avoid synthetic fragrances and aerosol sprays
• Replace nonstick pans with stainless steel or cast iron
• Store food and drinks in glass or stainless steel instead of plastic

The Environmental Working Group found that more than one quarter of women use products every day that contain ingredients known to be reproductive toxins. Even small swaps make a difference.

3. Improve the Air You Breathe

Indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air because of furniture, cleaning products, and artificial scents.

Open your windows for a few minutes each day to let fresh air in. Add a few indoor plants or consider using a HEPA air purifier in your bedroom. Avoid synthetic candles, air fresheners, and plug-ins that release volatile compounds. Spending time outdoors in green spaces can also support detox and nervous system balance.

4. Eat Real Food

What you eat can either add to your toxic load or help your body remove it. Focus on nutrient-rich, whole foods that your body recognizes.

• Eat colorful vegetables, clean sources of protein, and healthy fats
• Limit processed foods, refined sugars, and alcohol
• Buy organic when possible, especially for produce on the Dirty Dozen list
• Support digestion with fiber and fermented foods

5. Sweat and Move

Your skin is one of your biggest detox organs. Sweating helps release heavy metals and other compounds through the pores.

Exercise regularly, even if it is just walking, yoga, or bodyweight movements. If you have access to a sauna, use it a few times a week to support detoxification. Always hydrate and replace minerals afterward. Studies show that sauna therapy can help remove mercury, lead, and other toxins through sweat (Journal of Environmental and Public Health).

How Chiropractic Care Fits In

Chiropractic care supports your nervous system, which plays a key role in regulating every organ and process related to detoxification. When your spine moves well and your nervous system communicates clearly, your liver, kidneys, and gut can perform their jobs more effectively.

Adjustments also improve blood flow, lymphatic movement, and the body’s ability to adapt to stress. Patients often notice not only less pain and stiffness but also better sleep, more energy, and improved digestion after care. These changes show that the body is beginning to function at a higher level.

Reducing toxic exposure allows the nervous system to work without unnecessary interference. This combination of internal and external care helps create lasting results and a more resilient body.

The Takeaway

Reducing your toxic load is not about perfection or quick cleanses. It is about small, consistent actions that support your body’s natural ability to heal. When you drink clean water, move your body, open your windows, and choose products that nourish rather than burden, you create the conditions for health.

Chiropractic care helps align your spine and nervous system, while lifestyle choices remove the stressors that block healing. Together, they restore balance and help your body work the way it was designed to.

Start with one small change this week and build from there. Your body is always trying to heal. When you remove the obstacles, it finally can.
